After the war, the young would take any old jalopy they could find and 'hot' them up, hence the term, 'hot rods'. A whole culture of music and fashion developed around customizing, racing and showing off cars - literally, 'custom culture'. This culture has been re-appropriated and updated in recent years, and is known as 'kustom kulture'.
